In our previous post, we talked in depth about proper carpet care – what it involves, what to do and who to call. We saw that one of the key things, in order to preserve the lifespan of your office carpets, is to properly care for them, with the help of professional carpet cleaners.
There are many things and factors that go into office carpet cleaning, from choosing the right carpets, right fabrics, shapes, and colors, then taking care of them on a day-to-day basis, to having them professionally cleaned by reputable and experienced cleaning technicians. This may seem like a pretty difficult task, but if you go into it prepared and armed with knowledge and experience, it will be a lot easier. In the end, we all have the same goal – having our office carpets look the best they can for the longest period of time possible.
You might think that these are just carpets, just an addition to your office, but they are so much more. Bear in mind they contribute a lot to the overall look of your office, and can practically make it or break it. If they look run-down and worn out they can really affect the first impression you will make on your (potential) clients. Just think, what is the first thing they see when they come to your office? They will take a glance and decide whether the overall look of the office makes them feel welcome and comfortable and whether the office looks nice and well maintained. Carpets will play a major role in this first impression, together with other parts of the office, so why not take the time to make them look presentable? Of course, the entire office needs your time and effort, but today we’re focusing on office carpets.
So, let’s suppose you already have your office carpets installed, whether they are brand new or you’ve had them for some time. You want to take good care of them and to do it all by the book so they can last for as long as possible while looking the best they can. Is there anything we need to think about? Carpet care misconceptions – are there any?
For example, many people are told they should wait for as long as possible to have their new carpets steam cleaned. It’s quite possible you will feel a bit more cautious about your brand new carpets and deep cleaning them for the first time, maybe out of fear of ruining them. Or maybe you feel like there’s no need for steam cleaning since they are brand new. But beware; if you wait too long, there is a good chance that not all the ground in the dirt will come out, which will, of course, affect your carpet’s lifespan. The best thing to do here is to consult with your cleaning company; they will give you the best advice and suggest the right cleaning schedule for your new office carpets.
Another misconception floating around is that you should thoroughly clean your office carpets at least once a year. So, should you do it once a year or more? From the appearance standpoint, cleaning your carpets will get rid of dirt and stains and make them look nice and clean. But, this is just what you see on the outside. What about the inside of your carpets? The most damage to your carpets is done by small dirt particles that get walked into the pile. And, when you walk and move the carpet, these particles move and scrape against carpet fibers, ruining them with each and every step. And if you just go and vacuum the carpet, the fibers end up breaking and your carpets will start to look worn out and thin. So, make sure you work out a proper cleaning schedule with your carpet cleaning company and make sure your carpets get the care they need and deserve.
Carpet cleaning causes other misconceptions, such as the one where steam cleaning is shrinking your carpets. One important thing to keep in mind, this will never happen if you use a reputable and well-experienced professional cleaning company. Shrinking may occur if you try to clean the carpets yourself or if you use somebody with little experience and poor equipment. This will happen if too much water is sprayed and there is not enough vacuum to suck it out. Wool carpets are especially prone to shrinkage because it’s a natural fiber. Still, this could only happen if they become too saturated and take a long time to dry. If you want to avoid any possible damage and shrinkage, make sure you choose a reputable cleaning service with experienced technicians who will use the right equipment and will make sure to take proper care of your office carpets.
And finally (at least in this post), another cleaning misconception – it will eliminate dust mites in carpets and upholstery completely. No matter how good this sounds, unfortunately, it is quite impossible. Dust mites have a very short life cycle and are able to survive and thrive because of that. With the right cleaning technique you will get rid of most of them, but never of all them. Still, don’t be discouraged, just be persistent in your cleaning routine, use the right people for the job and dust mites will (almost) be history.
So, there you go, these are just some of carpet care misconceptions circling around. Of course, these not all of them, and in our future posts we’ll discuss others and see what the solutions are. And, to answer the question from our title, carpet care misconceptions – are there any? There are, and so many of them. But, as you might’ve noticed, there is one common denominator to all of them – professional carpet cleaning. With experienced cleaning professionals, you won’t have any problems or succumb to any of these misconceptions. You will have beautiful and clean carpets you will be proud of!
